How does a Enviroheat heat pump hot water system work?
Enviroheat water heaters work on the same principle as your refrigerator, but instead of pumping the heat out of the enclosed fridge’s compartment to keep it cool, the Enviroheat pumps heat into the water via a heat exchanger. Electricity is used to pump a refrigerant gas through the system. The refrigerant gases transfers the heat absorbed through the air into the water in the Enviroheat’s storage tank.
Enviroheat heat pumps work through the use of a refrigerant that evaporates at low temperatures.
There are several steps in the process:
- A liquid refrigerant passes through an evaporator where it picks up heat from the air and becomes a gas.
- The gas refrigerant is compressed in an electric compressor. Compressing the gas causes its temperature to increase so that it becomes hotter than the water inside the Enviroheat storage tank.
- The hot gas flow through the micro channel heat exchanger that wraps the cylinder, where it passes its heat to the water within and turns back into a liquid.
- The liquid refrigerant then flows into an expansion valve where its pressure is reduced, allowing it to cool and enter the evaporator and the cycle is repeated.
A heat pump uses electricity to drive the compressor and the fan instead, unlike a traditional electric storage hot water system that uses electricity to directly heat the water. The heat pump is able to transfer a much greater amount of heat energy from the surrounding air to the water, which makes it incredibly energy efficient.
